San Jose Del Cabo...we love you! What a FANTASTIC way to spend our first wedding anniversary! If Mexico calls, and Cabo is on your radar, definitely consider San Jose. With its newer resorts mixed with the historic small town (all walking distance even in the summer heat of Baja), it is much more quiet and riiiiiight up our alley for relaxation and avoidance of the party scene in Cabo. A heads up when you land at the airport. Unless you pre-book a ride to your hotel, do not accept rides from anyone inside the airport. Just go outside and find the guys in matching shirts who work for the only approved taxi company partnered with the airport. They have set fares and air-conditioned vans.
Upon our arrival we were in awe of the gorgeous Cabo Azul Resort. 3 pools (2 smaller for pure lounging and relaxation, one of which was adults only) plus the larger Infiniti pool complete with a swim-up bar sang out “VACATION TIME!” It was literally exactly what we hoped for...
We immediately got the lay of the land around the resort as our room was not yet ready (check in is at 4pm). After a brief attempt at getting us to listen to the time-share pitch - she even gave us a shot of tequila lol (yes, part of Cabo Azul is a timeshare property so it comes with the territory). The “concierge” filled us in on the grocery store, La Comer, that was walking distance (perfect for snacks and drinks which the resort is totally ok with having your own food/bev in all areas except for restaurants), and it had EVERYTHING! Pretty much a Super Wal-Mart and then some.
Once in our room - a very pleasant surprise! We opted for the Junior Suite, which is the smallest room in the resort but it was still huge! A living room separate from the bedroom, beautiful balcony overlooking one of the smaller pools plus a gorgeous bathroom. Larger would have been silly for just two of us. We grabbed our bathing suits and checked out the bigger pool.
For our first night dinner we opted for local fare outside of the resort since we had reservations at Javier’s the next night. A great taco shop proved AWESOME! Food and drinks on point! A 10 minute walk from Cabo Azul.
Early to bed and early to rise believe it or not! The next morning we made sure to get in a workout at the awesome resort gym, followed by a ping pong tournament (we didn’t do so hot but it was fun - photos make it look less painful lol)
It wouldn’t be a trip to San Jose Del Cabo without enjoying the ocean and nature! Luckily we didn’t have to go far - all right at the resort!!
It was at last time to head to Javier’s which is one of Liberty’s favorite Mexican restaurants in the states - you can find locations in Southern CA and Las Vegas - our vlog in part 1 of this blog details the visuals much better, but in summary...it was great! Ryan ordered chicken and Liberty the sea bass. We were serenaded by the mariachi band as well as the sunset-pink sky. Loved the skinny margaritas and sweet dessert they brought us in honor of our anniversary. Nothing out of this world to be honest, but very good and a wonderful evening.
The next day we decided to venture in the historic part of San Jose. Just a $7 taxi ride from the resort, we perused the tiny streets and checked out the typical Mexican chachskis. The town square is quiet this time of year, but neat to see.
Baja Brewing rose from the various older, dingier-looking restaurants like a beacon to us. To some it might be too commercial and shiny but we loved it! Shared the pulled pork burger and curly fries, plus a few brews of course! Delicious.
We decided to walk back to the resort to get some calories burned and check out the shops we saw from the taxi on the way. Got so hot...had to stop for one more cold one. (When in Mexico...) We did manage some water, too!
Our walk was hot as August is fiery down in Baja, but we loved it! Back at the resort we hit the pool again and decided to eat at the pool bar. Wonderful! Those bartenders work HARD! Great service!!!
Another quick dip in the ocean and early bedtime called again. We were excited to celebrate our anniversary the next day for as long as possible!
Our Anniversary day! Right across from the resort is a great little shopping center called Plaza del Pescador, with good eats and multiple places for massage. After a quick brunch we opted for the spot right by the fitness center that offered a couples massage for $120 US dollars total including tip!!! A far cry from $180 at the resort for one. It was worth it and then some!
What do you do after a massage? You relax some more in the adults only pool!
It seemed like we blinked and it was time to get ready for our big anniversary dinner out. We heard SO MUCH about Flora Farms when we would tell people about going to SJ del Cabo. The only reservation we could get was 8:30pm and now we know why.
It’s amazing!!! A $25 cab ride from the resort - Flora Farms is a little world unto itself. The property is a farm and was established in 1996, but it’s grown to shops and now homes. Organic, sustainable, and the restaurant, all outdoors, is farm to table.
Everything was absolutely so special and delicious! We shared a lovely bowl of the cold sweet corn soup, fresh garden salad and the pork shoulder. Veggies right from the garden. A light red wine to match. Perfection!! One of the property dogs came by for a visit and we really enjoyed the evening. We recommend getting there early (we arrived at 7:30 in time for the sunset, a drink at the bar, and to wander).
Sadly it was time to say good-bye the next day. We squeezed in room service for breakfast (quick and yummy!) and left with full tummies and hearts. Until next time San Jose del Cabo!!
